Nurse Jackie Sequel Series With Edie Falco Moves to Amazon From Showtime (EXCLUSIVE)

The “Nurse Jackie” sequel series is now in development at Amazon Prime Video with original star Edie Falco set to return, Variety has learned exclusively.
It was first reported in 2023 that a “Nurse Jackie” followup was in the works at Showtime from Lionsgate Television, but the project has now moved to Amazon.
The official logline states, “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”

Liz Flahive (“GLOW,” “Homeland”) and Abe Sylvia (“Palm Royale,” “George & Tammy”) serve as writers and executive producers on the sequel series, with both having worked as producers and writers on the original series. Sylvia is also attached to direct. Falco will also executive produce along with Bob Greenblatt, the former head of Showtime, NBC, and WarnerMedia Entertainment turned producer. Lionsgate Television, which produced the original series, is the studio.

Falco is repped by CAA and Entertainment 360. Sylvia is repped by CAA, Gartner Group Entertainment, Lichter, Grossman, and Origin Public Relations. Flahive is repped by WME, Kaplan Perrone, and Schreck Rose.
The original “Nurse Jackie” aired for seven seasons on Showtime between 2009 and 2015. It served as Falco’s first major starring vehicle post-“The Sopranos” and garnered considerable critical acclaim. Falco herself received six Emmy nominations for her time on the series, winning the award for best actress in a comedy in 2010. She was likewise nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for the series. The show itself received 24 Emmy nominations in total during its run, with cast member Merritt Wever winning the award for best supporting actress in a comedy in 2013.
The cast also included Eve Best, Peter Facinelli, Anna Deavere Smith, Stephen Wallem, Betty Gilpin, Haaz Sleiman, Dominic Fumusa, Paul Schulze, and Dominic Fumusa. The series was originally created by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem, and Evan Dunksy.
The fact that “Nurse Jackie” is moving to Amazon from Showtime is not altogether surprising given the current state of Showtime’s original programming. Once a powerhouse of scripted shows — including titles like “Nurse Jackie,” “Homeland,” “Weeds,” “Dexter,” and “Shameless” — Showtime now has just a handful of series on the air. This is coupled with the fact that the premium cabler was rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime in 2023. Paramount leadership had previously indicated they were developing several new shows for the network based off of existing IP, including a “Dexter” prequel and multiple spinoffs of “Billions.”
